Summer’s about to begin

Wednesday, 6 June 2007

I’ve been doing this for about 14 years and still, the transition into summer is incredibly weird; having to deal with unstructured time takes a little detox time from school life, but I think having children helps speed that process along. For instance, Evan will want me to play Lego Star Wars I and II so that he can tell me what to do; Colin will just want to be outside or do something physical (come on sun, warm up the pool).

Until then, I’m looking at my first usable OSX widget that I made under Dashcode and today it will run out…here’s what it looked like this morning:

Last long run in the books; Last swim of the season

Monday, 4 September 2006

Saturday’s 8 miles went without incident…listened to Wait, wait…don’t tell me and the beginning of This American Life “Americans in Paris” (starts with a piece about David Sedaris). Nice weather and really not much to write about. So, now it’s time to gear up for Saturday’s 26.2 miles and honestly, I haven’t the foggiest idear of how it will go. I put myself down for a target time of 3:50 … I’ll just enjoy the week of 3-4-2 mile runs (no speed work on Wednesday, though.

Today, Labor Day, marked the last swim of the season…sort of a sad time, but we all jumped in the pool together (at a mild 80 degrees … folks, that’s really cold for us).

Also, accomplished today was finishing the painting of the kitchen and downstairs bathroom (let me see if I can get some color swatches here…okay, the kitchen looks like the walls in the top picture on this page and go a shade darker for the bathroom area).

On Vacation and Heat Wave in California

Tuesday, 25 July 2006

As you can probably tell, I’ve been on vacation from all thing regular and timely for the past month. The flickr photos should show what I’ve been up to (Chicago, Ohio, fixing the pool, the Elkhart County 4-h Fair).

As far as running, I got that pain in the calf thing again on the 13-miler, so I backed off and decided to run on flat stuff for a few weeks. Now, 3 weeks later, I ran a 12 mile (at a nice pace) and then ran the Fair run Sunday (22.37)…so, it looks as though I’m ready to head for the hills again. I got lots of advice online and the upshot is this: hills are good, but you might get injured doing too much. I think the most plausible info was that my injuries happens going downhill–which can be avoided a bit by not leaning back…run over over your feet is the advice I read a couple of times.

So, I am happy with that and still plan on running in Warsaw, IN beginning of September (just got to do a few more long runs to commit myself). Then, planning on Columbus with Lori AND, if I’m crazy enough, might try Grand Rapids the end of October (very up in the air on that one…so don’t hold me to that one).

This week also marks the last week of “NO SCHOOL STUFF” month. Beginning next week, I jump back into planning and the throws of the coming school year.

Today is about making summer t-shirts for the boys; I’ll post pix when they get finished.

Huge Asteroid to Fly Past Earth on July 3

An asteroid possibly as large as a half-mile or more in diameter is rapidly approaching the Earth. It’s not gonna crash into us, but the space rock will make an exceptionally close approach to our planet early on Monday, July 3, passing just beyond the Moon’s average distance from Earth

Longest Day of the year…for DLST Indiana

Thursday, 22 June 2006

From my local paper:

Sunset will arrive tonight later than it has in decades due to Indiana’s change to daylight-saving time. The extra hour of light brought by daylight-saving time means the sun rose at 6:09 a.m. today and will set at 9:22 p.m., making today the longest day of the year.

And, in case you haven't been up on the controversy, here's a light-hearted look at the change.

Day before the Truck cometh

Thursday, 22 June 2006

This morning’s run was 3 miles and I listened to Train again (I know, I need to put something else on the iPod). Though only 70 degrees f, the humidity was @ 90%…cool running, eh?

Tomorrow will begin one of my big summer of 06 goals: cleaning out the pool house (or shack) and the car port. Lots of cement, weedery and junk that just plain needs to go bye-bye now.
